Is my roof leaking?

THIS PHOTO ABOVE SHOWS A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING THAT COULD BE HAPPENING IN A TROUBLED ROOF

So we have been asked numerous times "how can i tell if my roof is leaking"

The fist stage would be if your are able to and it is safe to do so take a look into your roof space with a torch.

Then start looking for some vital signs such as:

felt sagging

felt with holes

daylight shinning through

These are all vital signs that your roof may need an inspection to see what is going on to cause the felt to fail before water starts poring through into your property.

Then their are other stages such as:

Water staining on the roof timbers

Water staining on the ridge board

Water staining on valley boards

Water staining on hip timbers

or even worse wood rot on the roof timbers. This basically means water has and is coming through causing damage to your structual timbers,

In some cases causing roof collapse or the roof to spread eventually pushing your walls out

Thankfully this doesnt happen often

Then we come to chimneys,

The basic signs for a leaking chimney:

water running down the chimney wall inside the property

black dirty water stains

soft powdery render (if the chimney is rendered in the loft space)

daylight shinning through between the roof and the chimney

These are all basic checks any one can do in there roof space at home if it is safe to do so.
